4 Personal Qualities that Affect Your Business

Running a business is tough and you usually find that out very quickly.

You have to constantly be on top of your game, be the best to your clients and employees too, deal with constant conflicts let alone all the stress a business generates. But apart from that you also have to control and work on yourself too.

In business you can’t be your true self all the time. In fact for most of the time you have to play a role of someone else, a person your clients love but that’s not always you, depending on your nature of course. You have to stop thinking about yourself first, your needs and wants and put other people ahead of you.

And that’s what causes the most problems for business owners. I know, shame to admit but I cracked many times myself and hence I know how dangerous some of our personal qualities can be to a business.

  1. Pride. We are proud, you can’t deny that. Of course some of us more than the others yet still, we are all proud. When it comes to dealing with clients though, a golden rule is to keep your pride well hidden. The key is to remember that no matter what the issue is, it is the client that pays the bill and sometimes there simply is no point arguing over such small things as who came up with that killer idea or who actually was right. Remember, you may win the argument but lose the client. Is it worth it?
  2. Temper. Business world is full of conflicts. Vendors, clients, coworkers or employees, you fight with all of them. Not all the time of course but each week is full with bigger or smaller conflicts. They are a nature of a business, however it is important to do not let your temper takes hold of you no matter what. It is easy to explode with anger at a client making a hundredth silly revision or a vendor who made a mistake in that last minute delivery or something else happens. It is much more difficult to fix the relationship afterward.
  3. Inability to deal with stress. Stress is an integral part of running a business. From a fore mentioned conflicts to fear of financial future and anything in between, as business people we live under constant stress. If you are serious about business you have to develop an ability to deal with it and enjoy the life no matter what happens in your business.
  4. Inability to separate personal and professional lives. It’s hard to stay sane in business. With all the stress, conflicts, uncertainty you need to get away from it all even for a while. And that’s what you have your personal life for. However, many business people have trouble separating the two apart. You bring work home and take your home problems to work with you, never to be able to fully escape from either. In order to succeed in business you need to have a clear perspective on what is going on in it and believe me, you will not gain it if you live in it all the time.
